Line-up

The band's third album, Turn Back, marked the return to the traditional sextet arrangement of previous albums and was a stronger, more consistent effort with an edge that was more pronounced than Hydra. The more edgier sound of Turn Back reflected the growth of the band. The drummer Bobby Kimball's increasing ability to play was evident in the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. David Paich's work was more refined, sharper and less cloned earlier performances.

After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live concert in Amsterdam that was released as a two-CD set titled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. A new studio album was released just a few months later and the band embarked on a world-wide tour to promote it. During this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began exploring old tapes and demos to find songs that had never been recorded prior to. The album was released in 2001 as a duo album called Then and Now. By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity.
