The Band Toto

Albums

Toto's discography comprises 13 studio albums and four live albums. There are also a few compilations. In addition to releasing original music, Toto has also done collaborations with other artists as well as on soundtracks for films. Toto has won numerous Grammy Awards.

Before Toto was formed, members of the band played session work for other musicians. David Paich, the son of session drummer Marty Paich, and Jeff Porcaro (the brother of guitarist Joe Porcaro and drummer Jeff Porcaro) all played on Boz Scaggs’ 1975 album Silk Degrees. Toto was formed in 1976 in the wake of the collaboration.

Turn Back, Toto's third studio album was criticized by critics due to the absence of hit singles. In 1985, lead singer Fergie Frederiksen resigned from the group and the band held auditions for a new frontman. The band picked guitarist Steve Lukather, and recorded Fahrenheit in 1986.

In 1998, Toto celebrated its 20th anniversary by going through several demos and tapes from the past to release a special record called Toto XX. The album was well-received by fans, and Toto began the tour with former members Bobby Kimball Steve Porcaro and Joseph Williams.

Shem Von Schröck replaced Leland Sklar as drummer during the tour in support of the 40 Trips Around the Sun album. In 2017, Toto released a double-CD live album titled Falling in Between, which included live recordings from the tour and an interview with Toto.

Drummer David Hungate also left the band after the tour. He was replaced by bassist Leland Sklar.

Toto has released a variety of music videos. The band has also released a number of compilation videos and DVDs. The most watched video by the band is "Africa" which has over one billion views. The video is set in a library, and shows the group performing on top of a pile of books about Africa.

The track "Africa" is from the album Toto IV. The song was written by members of the band and produced David Paich. It was a huge success in Europe and many other countries. The success of the single helped Toto to regain their fame following their previous album Turn Back failed to chart in America.

Following the release of the album, Toto went on a world tour. The group was comprised of touring musicians Lenny Castro and Shannon Forrest. Warren Ham, Shem von Schröeck and Shem von Schroeck also were part of the group. In addition guitarist Steve Lukather released his second solo album, Luke.

In 1985 the drummer Fergie Frederiksen left Toto due to personal reasons. The group decided to hold an audition, and eventually chose Joseph Williams to replace Frederiksen.

Prior to and during the time of Toto's formation the members of the group worked as session musicians for a diverse range of artists. Drummer Jeff Porcaro and bassist David Hungate performed on the album Silk Degrees by Boz Scaggs which led to Toto's formation. Keyboardist Paich was frequent on records by Steely Dan, Seals and Crofts, and Sonny and Cher.
