How to Replace an audi a1 key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located on the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU via an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can trigger spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of an issue with the chain or a jump in the chain link of the upper timing chain. However, the error code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit tricky since there are two connector pins and they have different functions but the most effective method to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is fully functional, it should read around 1000 ohms. If you are having problems with this sensor, look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at a high speed, i noticed a huge decrease in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors weren't firing. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs. Three were drenched with gazoline the fourth one was dry. When I crank the engine, there are no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on the top of each hole in the injector, the 3 drenched with gazoline pop out, but the 4th stays shut. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I'm assuming the issue is in another place.

I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it is running fine with the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue still occurs at higher RPM. The temperature sensor replacement key for audi a4 the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value -49c, even if I unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar but the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not certain what to do, i think i've pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. I'm worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find a spare in a wrecking shop or a parts store. It is simple to test them to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's end). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that must know the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of the fuel injectors, etc. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If you are experiencing issues with either of these sensors, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could cause an engine shutdown.

The signs of a failing G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox the gears are shifting faster than normal, and/or a misfire when you are in gear. It is probable that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you encounter any of these signs. They're cheap and easy to find particularly if they're a Bosch model like ours. Alternatively, the GM version of this component is also a good option.

5. Tachometer

A faulty engine speed sensor could be the reason behind a slew of issues with your car. It's an essential component of the transmission of your replacement audi key cost since it sends information to the ECU regarding how fast or slow the car's engine is turning. If this sensor fails, it can disrupt the performance of the transmission as well as the other car's components.

The G5 engine sensor is located at the edge of transmission, above the flywheel ring. It sends an electrical signal through an uncolored wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this signal to control the amount of fuel and boost, and also timig. It also transmits it to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster. You can test for sensor failure by checking continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. Additionally, you can verify continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. You should see approximately 1000 ohms of resistance between those two pins. This is a standard part across the audi advance key 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC until the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU, so the best ones might be availble in wrecking yards.
